H.R.2003 Passed in the House

The House of Representatives passed H.R.2003, the Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007. It will ensure that future U.S. monetary aid to Ethiopia is contingent upon Ethiopia's further democratization, accountability for human rights abusers, and justice for the wronged. H.R. 2003 encourages a stable, secure and economically viable future for this jeopardized region.

Dr. Berhanu Nega in New York:

On September 6, 2007, Dr. Berhanu Nega delivered a talk at The New School for Social Research. It was a huge success! You can see the archived webcast of the talk here. It followed the New School convocation where President Bob Kerrey conferred on Dr. Nega the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Stop U.S. Support for Human Rights Violations in Ethiopia!

This campaign is not about the rights of one man. It is about the fundamental rights that comprise the basis of a global democratic order. The outrageous response of the Ethiopian government to the elections and protest in 2005 and the continued incarceration of the opposition and media is in breach of a number of universal human rights standards and conventions.

Sixty-eight political prisoners in Ethiopia, including Dr. Berhanu Nega, have been freed! Many of the prisoners, earlier threatened with execution, had been sentenced to life in prison. Thanks to grassroots pressure, the U.S. Congress was compelled to act. Release of the first 38 prisoners came just two days after a Congressional subcommittee approved legislation to end U.S. support for Ethiopia’s human rights violations.
